Mount Washington Observatory’s (MWOBS) largest annual fundraiser will return for its 24th year. Seek the Peak will feature a hike-a-thon and Après Hike Expo, inviting hikers of all ability levels to raise vital funds for the Observatory and celebrate adventure in the White Mountains. Find all the details and register for your hike HERE.

The purpose of MWOBS Seek the Peak fundraiser is to raise money to sustain our educational and scientific programs. We need your help to fundraise, hike, and celebrate with us. We’re planning a dynamic event with a reinvigorated Aprés Hike Expo that features a catered meal with Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant. We’ll also have an 80′ climbing wall manned by Mount Washington Valley climbing schools, more than 500 outdoor enthusiasts hiking and raising funds, LIVE music, a speaker, and competitions for school children and business teams.

Again this year, individuals have the option to be matched with other participants of similar ability levels to complete a hike of their choosing together from the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Joe Dodge Lodge on Saturday, July 20, 2024 with our Hike and Make Friends program. Join us to hike the trails of Mount Washington, NH, located on the White Mountain National Forest or Seek Your Peak anywhere in the world.

Find all the details and register for your hike HERE.

Join us on the summit of Mount Washington this October 15, 2024 for our Founding Day. We’ll have free tours and an Open House at our world famous mountaintop weather station.

On October 15, 1932, Bob Monahan, Sal Pagliuca, Alex MacKenzie, and Joe Dodge set up a permanent presence on the summit. Using funds obtained from a research grant and a few private donors, the Mount Washington Observatory was formally established, with a mission of advancing the understanding of weather, climate, and the mountain itself.

Just two years later, on April 12, 1934, the Observatory captured what was then the fastest surface wind speed ever observed by man, at 231 mph. This thrust Mount Washington into the spotlight and highlighted the value in having a mountaintop weather station.

Due to their steadfast dedication and the Observatory staff that followed, this mountaintop weather station remains a unique operation staffed 365 days a year and proudly maintains one of the longest running climate records in North America. Now 89 years rich in history we continue to gather, disseminate and analyze daily weather data; to contribute to the critical, long-term weather and climate record essential to scientific understanding of weather and climate in a unique, extreme environment. Here’s to approaching our 92th anniversary, and many more anniversary’s to come!

While we at the Observatory are extremely proud to celebrate our history, it is only a fraction of what makes the day so special. None of it would have been possible without the support of our members! Thank you to everyone who has had a hand in making the Observatory what it is today, we genuinely couldn’t do it without you!
